Bringing Heritage to Life Exhibition

Tender description

Having received a small grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2019, we conducted research into the borough’s music and radio heritage during the period 1989-1994. We recorded 30 oral histories; collected photographs, flyers and produced a booklet. 25 volunteers collaborated with us to amass this collection and through our research we discovered how important the borough was in shaping a national music scene; how pioneering our young people were; how undocumented it has been and what an influence the borough’s Caribbean population (particularly Jamaican) have had on its cultural development. More importantly, how little this story has been told. We now want to take this opportunity to tell this story, bringing heritage to life in new and innovative ways, using digital technology, inspiring another generation of creators and a sense of pride. Through a series of free artworks, events and workshops we will bring people together to create meaningful experiences, engaging and inspiring them, celebrating this creative period, creating new works with young people in response to the archive and involving the local community.
