Summary of the work Creating/designing GDS compliant content that communicates information to users with differing needs, ensuring the product adheres to accessibility standards. The CD will work closely with the Service Owner, and Product team, to ensure users can find, understand and navigate the information they need and create help, guidance and training. Specialist role Content designer Expected Contract Length 6 weeks Latest start date Sunday 31 January 2021 Maximum Day Rate £320 a day (not including VAT) Early Market Engagement The specialist will work with the ‘Transfer Digital Records’ product team. The team are building a product which will enable the secure transfer of selected born digital public records to The National Archives. The service offers tools for content upload, validation and transfer of ownership to the Archive. The primary users of TDR will be transferring public record bodies. The TDR team have completed in-house Discovery and Alpha prototyping phases to determine the scope of the proposed service and are currently over midway in the Beta build of the product. The product is due to go live in private Beta by the end of March 2021. We require a content designer to work on the end-to-end journey of this web based service designing, creating and reviewing content that will help users complete their goal, making sure appropriate content and notifications are shown to a user in the right place and in the best format. Who Speclialist Work With The specialist will work with the Digital Selection and Transfer Service Owner and the ‘Transfer Digital Records’ product team at The National Archives, in particular the user researchers, designers and developers to challenge assumptions and test ideas, writing content which meets user needs as clearly, simply and quickly as possible.. The specialist in addition will need to engage with stakeholders and users to present work, demonstrate designs, and seek feedback as the work progresses. What Specialists Work On • Web editing, copywriting and content design for accessibility • Content strategy • Take user needs and present them in the most effective format • Avoid duplication and ensure content can be found easily • Create training guidance, help and manuals • Work within GDS compliant style guides • UX content writing • Tone and voice Skills & Experience • Extensive experience of writing for the web, with proven ability to create usable and accessible content for different platforms and devices • Have experience of working within accessibility standards and best practice • Excellent skills in convincing people to take a user-needs approach to content creation • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team in an agile development environment • Demonstrable knowledge and passion for user centred design practices for public facing and internal services and applications • Experience of using metrics and user feedback to define and iterate content Nice to Haves • An understanding of a progressive enhancement approach to design and build • Have experience of working within GDS standards and best practice • Creating content across devices, tools and transactional services, especially those with complex user journeys • Experience in a web application development environment, and be proficient in Markdown, picture sourcing and editing • Experience in content publishing systems and processes Work Location Remote working is possible for this position. Working Arrangments Embedded into a multi-disciplinary agile product team. Normal office hours are 9am to 5pm, but flexible working is available including part applications for part time workers. We expect to interview on 13 January 2021. Is there a current incumbent? We have user researchers and UI designers in the TDR product team but no dedicated content designer so no, there is no incumbent in this role. 2. Is there a possibility this will extend past 6 weeks? There is a possibility for a short extension, depending on how the work is progressing, the quality of the outputs and the buyer’s overall satisfaction with the work. In any event, the contract must end on or before the end of our current financial year on 31 March 2021. 3. Does IR35 apply for this role? We have checked the role requirements (to the best of our knowledge) using the assessment tool found at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-employment-status-for-tax and, in our opinion, for the role(s) as advertised the intermediaries legislation does not apply to this engagement. We reserve the right to recheck using the assessment tool once an award decision has been made, should any of our prior assumptions have proved incorrect. 4. Under Security Clearance it mentions Baseline – Can you confirm if this means BPSS (as expected) or whether you would consider a Candidate who has no clearance?
