<p>Overview: Sheffield General Cemetery was established in 1836, designed by Sheffield-based architect, Samuel Worth. Laid out in the garden cemetery style, it was always intended to be a place where people could stroll, admire the monuments and enjoy the landscape. Most burials ceased in the 1950s, with a trickle until the 1970s, and the Cemetery languished untouched and deteriorating until Sheffield City Council (SCC) purchased it in 1978, securing an Act of Parliament to make the cemetery a public park and subsequently clearing away an area of headstones to create an open green space. SCC has been awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of a four-year programme of repair, conservation, and access improvements for Sheffield General Cemetery. The funding was granted to enable the conservation and interpretation of the Cemetery&rsquo;s heritage, improvement of facilities and to create an accessible, safe and welcoming public park.</p> Keywords: .
