Birr 2020 CLG is seeking to engage a multidisciplinary team to undertake a feasibility study into the provision of Green Energy by the Anaerobic Digestion process (AD). As a preliminary the Project Reference Group has agreed that all the international evidence suggests that AD is sufficiently well tested and used for the process’s reliability to be accepted without further investigation. There are two key areas of focus: • Provide an income-earning opportunity for part-time farmers being made redundant by Bord na Mona, as well as other interested farmers, through the growing of bio-energy crops. • Re-orientating of energy use from fossil fuels and carbon-creating sources to green energy sources in the Birr area of south Offaly with, in the first instance, public buildings in Birr being used as exemplars.
