Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have secured £4.2m EU funding for the PEACE IV Local Authority Action Plan - Beyond Tolerance. As lead partner, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will be responsible for the delivery of the PEACE IV action plan which will promote peace and reconciliation in the local area focusing on three key themes: “Children and Young People”, “Shared Spaces and Services” and “Building Positive Relations”. As part of their responsibility under the “Beyond Tolerance” action plan, the Council is seeking to appoint a competent supplier to deliver free play schemes as part of the “Youth Engagement Programme” under the “Children and Young People” theme. To facilitate relationship building between young people of different backgrounds (including BME) and between young people and services through thematic activities, including but not limited to creating engagement opportunities through physical activity and creative play. This programme aims to create opportunities for engagement in areas which do not mix, and generate opportunities for young people from different traditions, cultural backgrounds or political opinions to meet and develop positive relationships where there are no natural linkages. The free play projects aspect of the Programme is to bring young people, of primary/secondary school age, together through the medium of play. These projects are not focused on sports but aim to engage children and young people through traditional play. The projects also aim to develop the participant’s soft skills and respect for diversity through age appropriate actions. The delivery of fifteen free play schemes for children of primary/Secondary school age (4-16 years old) within the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Area during Spring, Summer and Autumn 2020/21. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council will provide suitable facilities for these schemes free of charge.
