Provision of Limerick City and Environs Green and Blue Infrastructure Strategy

Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) is preparing a new Development Plan for Limerick. The Development Plan will set out objectives, policies, and land use zoning to guide future development within the city and county for the period 2022-2028. The plan must align with national and regional planning strategies and guidance, including; the National Planning Framework 2040, the Southern Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy 2031, the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Strategic Plan 2031 and Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy 2040. A key thread within these frameworks and strategies is the need for a reduction of the impact of the human footprint on its receiving environment and the increase in use of Green and Blue Infrastructure to help drive the transition to a Low Carbon and Climate Resilient Society. This can be achieved through measures including compact growth, prioritisation of sustainable travel, and enabling growth which enhances our environmental assets. Within this context, LCCC is tendering for the delivery of a Green and Blue Infrastructure (GBI) Strategy that can: • directly inform the protection and enhancement of our GBI assets including our important and vulnerable habitats, natural heritage, and green and blue spaces, • promote the use of nature based solutions in developments as an alternative to traditional engineering systems • create strong multifunction linkages between GBI assets • add increased value that improves the quality of life for all Limerick City residents, employees and visitors.
