The EPMA has now become a key priority for the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust’s informatics strategy. The trust are interested in suppliers who can provide an EPMA will provide the capability of comprehensive medicines prescribing and administration functionality with appropriate decision support to all our care settings. To guide improved prescribing choices based on clinical parameters such as laboratory results, age/weight, allergy status and medicines interactions as well as promoting compliance with local and national prescribing guideline and formularies. The solution must include full interoperability to allow data integration between hospital systems (pathology results, electronic care record, etc.) and wider healthcare systems and confirm to current up to date best practice guidance from NHS Digital. An EPMA system is strategically significant for the Trust, and the drivers for implementing EPMA include: • improvement of patient safety – reduction in errors and an ability to monitor more closely defined high risk medications; • integrated working between professional groups and locations; • paperless working; • the patient pathway – by the use of designated drug order sets; • mobile ways of working/prescribing including off site locations and Community; • enhanced level of drug information to GP and community pharmacies upon patient discharge; • patient level drug costing data; • full audit trail of drug administration by the use of barcode technology. Whilst the prime objective of the project is to improve patient safety, the implementation of an EPMA system will improve integrated working between staff and support greater efficiency as a result of having better information at the point of drug prescribing, supply and administration.
