National Strategic Salt Reserve Storage Contracts for the North West, North East and Southern England. Highways England is responsible for managing the National Salt Reserve on behalf of the Department for Transport. Under the current arrangements Highways England stores salt at Ellesmere Port and Garston, North Killingholme, Ridham and Sharpness. In the event of a prolonged and severe winter this salt would be made available to Local Highway Authorities.
