Cardiff & Vale Health Board has a requirement to purchase a Heart Lung Machine and Heater-Cooler System to enable essential cardiac surgery provision in 2nd Llandough Theatre. Cardiff & Vale University Health Board has a requirement to purchase a new Heart Lung Machine and Heater-Cooler Unit to enable essential cardiac surgery provision in 2nd Llandough Theatre. A Heart Lung Machine (HLM) is an apparatus that does the work both of the heart (i.e., pumps blood) and the lungs (i.e., oxygenates the blood) during, for example, open-heart surgery. The basic function of the HLM is to oxygenate the body's venous supply of blood and then to pump it back into the arterial system. Blood returning to the heart is diverted through the machine before returning it to the arterial circulation. The HLM also provides intracardiac suction, filtration, and temperature control. Heater-cooler devices are used during cardiopulmonary bypass to help regulate the temperature of the patient's blood during cardiac, vascular or transplant surgery. They are an essential part of the equipment needed for these types of procedures.
