Cost of Care

Care fees must drive change in behaviour (from staff, providers, and residents) by developing and supporting the market place for services that meet the needs and expectations of all customers, including self-funders, and carers. The central aim of the council is to shift resources and activities from meeting need to approaches that prevent, reduce and delay need. To do this the council must work with providers and customers as partners in an open, transparent and honest way to inform and influence commissioning activity. Central to this will be a fair cost of care, for all parties that helps achieve value for money and achieve desired outcomes. We understand that commissioners must assure themselves that fee levels for care and support services are appropriate to provide the delivery of the agreed care packages with agreed quality of care. If fees are set too low, commissioners risk provider failure, reduction in quality and standards and a destabilised market. Wirral MB Council is looking to undertake an exercise which provides: Assurance and/or amendments to the current cost of care model applied for Residential and Nursing Care, Consideration of how a more standardised approach to cost of care can be applied to specialist residential care, Development of a cost of care model for supported living. The outputs of this exercise are to feed through into Autumn Member decision-making and are to coincide with decisions required from Members regarding the further roll-out of local living wage
