Tender description

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust are currently progressing a full business case to proceed with their GBP 79.4 million construction project at Musgrove Park hospital, the Phase 2 Surgical Centre. The Surgical Centre will mean the relocation of General Theatres and ICU from the 1940’s old building and creating a state of the art endoscopy department and sterile services department. The Surgical Centre is designed with 4 floors, 3 are clinical and 1 is plant. The ground floor will accommodate an endoscopy department with 6 procedure rooms. The first floor will accommodate the Surgical Admission Lounge, 8 operating theatres and associated recovery beds. The second floor will accommodate a 22 bedded ICU. The enabling works for the build have begun in August. As part of these works the sterile services department will be having a new build of its very own. The current department services 16 operating theatres as well as multiple procedure rooms in and around not only the Musgrove site but the community as well. With the expansion of the operating theatres the unit will require an upgrade to fully support the new Surgical Centre as well as maintaining service to the current departments. The new build will be 2 storeys with the SSD department on the first floor and office and support spaces on the ground floor. This is to enable easy access to the theatres all on the first floor. The sterile services team would welcome expressions of interest from vendors with the ability to supply 4 pass through washers, 2 pass through container washers and 3 pass through sterilisers for the new department. We are looking at running from a mixture of steam and electric machines. The estimated throughput volumes based on 2018/19 prior to Covid are 150 000 din baskets and 150 000 containers. With the additional 3 theatres there would as a guide be an extra 9 000 din baskets and 9 000 containers per theatre. We would look to begin installation in October 2021. Along with this the team are also interested in the exploring ultrasonic washers and pass through hatches. Ideally we would like to explore a complete SSD solution that would include equipment for the Decon room, IAP, Material transfer, Gowning rooms, and Autoclave and store rooms. The full specification along with the tender documentation will be sent out at a later date. Service packages, warranty and maintenance alongside training are equally important to the department.
