Tender description

The project is for the provision of a new woodland trail/walk within an existing mature woodland (Glebe Wood) in the village of Donemana, Strabane. BACKGROUND Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) and its various partners have recently completed similar facilities within the Council area and given their subsequent success, DCSDC would like to develop another woodland trail in the village of Donemana. An ICT with full design responsibilities has been appointed and has developed the design to Stage 4 – Technical Design (RIBA Plan of Work 2020 Stage 4). LOCATION and SITE DESCRIPTION Whilst the site is located to the East of the local Church and Primary School, the site access (farm/field gate) of the proposed facility is located between properties No 2 and No 8 Lupin Avenue, Donemana, Strabane, BT82 0PG (off Longland Road). DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT The contract is for the construction of a woodland trail/walk of an approximate length of 1.2km within a 7.6Ha mature/ancient woodland. The proposed works will take place within an environment of a highly sensitive nature due to the presence of a rich Fauna (bats, badgers, birds, etc.) and Flora, amongst which, a large variety of valuable ancient oaks and other varied tree species are present. All proposed works will require a substantial amount of planning with regards to the protections of those trees and main animal species found on site in order to avoid inflicting damages to those species. Those protections measures will be dictated and reviewed by the Lead Consultant’s Ecologist. It is envisaged that as a minimum, the proposed facility (not required to be DDA compliant but as accessible as possible) will generate the following works: Vegetation clearance (trees, shrubs and woodland sub-strata vegetation) and the construction of a new aggregate footpath, including geotextile, aggregate base, quarry dust wearing course, timber edging, drainage and other associated works such as provision of bespoke timber bridges, timber boardwalks, timber steps/ramps (with handrail), fencing (with gates), street furniture, signage, etc. Adjacent to the proposed footpath, the construction of an outdoor classroom (with seating) and planting of a community orchard (with associated natural play facility) will also be required. This list is not exhaustive and it will be the responsibility of the ICT to determine the totality of the works required to bring the proposed facility up to relevant BS/EU standards, Outdoor Recreation NI’s requirements and Client’s aspirations. CONTRACTOR DESIGN The Contractor will be required to undertake and accept full responsibility for the design of parts of the works. This includes, but is not limited to all temporary works and structures (such as bridges and boardwalks) required as part of the proposals. CONSTRUCTION PERIOD The contract period for the project is 12 weeks with a 12 month defects and Maintenance liability/correction period for most of the works/materials with an exception for proposed semi-matures trees (i.e. size 20/25 and above), for which a 24 month defects and Maintenance liability/correction period will apply.
