Tender description
Working collaboratively with the Police and Surrey Fire and Rescue Services, the highways traffic team have a requirement for secure connectivity to receive data from and send data to static devices in the field. In the past, this need was met with very expensive fixed copper or fibre circuits connecting the device to a network and then mobile broadband offered a much more flexible and cost-efficient way to connect but individual network provider coverage dead-spots often created issues. The traffic operations team and Surrey/Sussex Police currently have over 350 sims in automatic number plate recognition cameras (ANPR), traffic signals, variable messaging signs (VMS) and CCTV cameras throughout the county. The contract will run for an initial period of 4 years extendable in increments 2 years plus 2 years to a maximum of 8 years. Often working collaboratively with the Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue Services, the highways traffic team (and potentially other teams in the future) have a requirement for secure connectivity to receive data from and send data to static devices in the field. In the past, this need was met with very expensive fixed copper or fibre circuits connecting the device to a network and then mobile broadband offered a much more flexible and cost-efficient way to connect but individual network provider coverage dead-spots often created issues. This need has more recently been met through Secure M2M (Machine to Machine) connectivity, which is provided by selecting the best mobile network coverage for each site, aggregating the mobile data traffic from all such locations and providing a secure connection into Surrey Council’s Primary Data Centre. By providing this service by Private APN, it has traffic priority level above Public APN so would prove more protected at times of crisis. These connections may be used for traffic signals and signs, cameras, vehicles, etc., anywhere there is a need to communicate with or receive data from a static device.
