Tender description

Electrical and mechanical updates of three self-shielded irradiators holding Co-60 radioactive sources. Regular (5 year) resource of one irradiator with cobalt-60 sources. The work involves upgrades to one unit (AECL GammaCell 220 S/N 89R) that can only be carried out when the Co-60 sources have been removed. This involves transportation of the unit in a licensed irradiation container to a specialised facility with the capability to handle high activity radioactive sources. After completion of the upgrade, the unit will be reloaded with an increased number of Co-60 sources. The upgrades on the two units (AECL GammaCell 220 S/N 77R and NCP SuperHotspot 3000) will be done on-site at NPL. The work will involve the following operations: Note: some operations are only applicable to the irradiator being taken off-site. • dismantling of the irradiators; • making safe irradiators for transport and/or upgrades; • movement of irradiator into transport container; • updates to electronics and mechanical mechanisms of irradiators; • testing, assessment of upgrades to all units. Report on same; • loading of unit with new cobalt-60 sources to bring activity level to requirement; • return of unit after upgrades and resource; • testing and report on all units on return/completion of work at NPL. All of above must meet all NPL, UK and EU regulatory and health and safety requirements at all times.
