Tender description
The nature and extent of the proposed development is outlined under points A – D below. (A) Refurbishment of Comerford House which is a Protected Structure to provide exhibition spaces, visitor and staff facilities for Galway City Museum. Works will include piling, flood protection works, general upgrade, including refurbishement of internal and external finishes (incl lime plasterworks), upgrade of existing structure, re-roofing of existing building, museum standard M&E services. (B) Construction of a 3- storey steel framed aluminium clad building on piled foundations above the archaeological site adjoining the Spanish Arch, a National Monument, and within a flood zone. Connected to Comerford House it will provide exhibition spaces, storage and visitor facilities, including a new lift and stair, and museum standard M&E services for Galway City Museum. (C) Remodelling of hard and soft landscaping within ‘Museum Clos’ between the Spanish Arch, and the existing Galway City Museum, together with local elements of hard landscaping in front of Comerford House and the Spanish Arch within the Fish Market. (D) Alterations to the existing Galway City Museum building include: new exit door from reception lobby, with new steps and Part M platform lift, new canopies and display windows, relocated ESB sub-station and enclosure. The proposal has undergone Appropriate Assessment Screening under the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). A flood risk assessment, archaeological assessment, architectural conservation report, and architectural design and impact assessment have been prepared in support of these proposals.
