The design of the structural solution to provide a wider and improved road alignment designed by the consultant over Glenmore Bridge on the R232, Co. Donegal

Tender description

The R232 is an important link within County Donegal connecting Laghey near Donegal Town with the border town of Pettigo on the Donegal / Fermanagh Border. Donegal County Council is systematically widening this road and upgrading the horizontal and vertical alignment in the process. As part of this programme of upgrades, Donegal County Council intend to widen the section of road over Glenmore Bridge. Glenmore Bridge is a tall and long single span masonry arch structure. The road is supported on embankments (approx 4m) constructed directly above the bridge supporting a 5.5m carriageway with narrow barriered verges across the structure. The embankments are heavily vegetated with trees growing within this material. It is envisioned that if possible, the consultant will fully utilise the width of the existing masonry bridge structure within their design by either designing a retaining structure or extending the masonry arch bridge. The Consultant will also consider the Option of a new bridge. Donegal County Council are seeking tenders from suitably qualified consultant engineers to develop and design the structural solution to faciltate the provision of an improved road alignment and cross section designed by the consultant over the bridge. The appointment will require the consultant to undertake the necessary site surveys and investigations, the bridge and road design, obtain the statutory approvals, oversee the tender process, manage the construction project and handover the completed project to the client in accordance with the project brief.
