Advisory Services for Wood Fuel and Standards

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is responsible for the development of forestry in Ireland. The island of Ireland currently produces approximately 4 million cubic metres of roundwood annually which is forecasted to rise to over 8 million by 2035. In 2018 over 40% of the wood fibre available for use in the Republic of Ireland was used for energy purposes. The use of wood for energy purposes plays an important role in the forest product sector where it is used to dry wood in kilns. However in addition the use of wood biomass for biofuels and heat will play an important role as we reduce Ireland’s dependency on fossil fuels. DAFM require advisory services in the development and monitoring of wood fuel standards including the inputting into ISO and CEN working groups on biofuels. DAFM through the COFORD Council have developed a significant range of information notes on wood fuels that need to be reviewed and updated. DAFM also require a number of workshops on wood energy to coincide with launch of the recent Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH) to be run to raise awareness of requirement for quality in wood fuels. Advisory services must also be provided through the wood energy website (www.woodenergy.ie). The n a sustainable basis that is compatible with the protection of the environment. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (“the Department”) now wishes to invite tenders for undertaking the delivery of advisory services on the development of wood fuel standards pursuant to the conditions of tendering contained in this document.
