Tender description
The Inspiring People project includes the refurbishment and alteration of the Grade I listed National Portrait Gallery. An indicative scope of works is set out below which will include appropriate elements to be designed by the contractor. The actual scope of works will be determined later. — refurbishment of the existing galleries, — construction of a new main entrance and forecourt to the North of the building, — improvements to circulation and accessibility including creation of a new Entrance Hall, — refurbishment of the East Wing including adaptation of back of house spaces to provide additional galleries, enhanced retail and catering offers, — enhanced Learning Centre through partial infilling of the lightwell to the North of the building and alterations to the internal layout, — upgrades to plant rooms and infrastructure, — enabling works prior to the main works outlined above. Construction works within Grade I listed National Portrait Gallery including the creation of a new entrance and Entrance Hall, the refurbishment of galleries, alteration and reconfiguration of front and back of house spaces, provision of enhanced Learning Centre, retail areas, food and beverage provision. External works to create a new public forecourt. An indicative scope of works is set out below which will include appropriate elements to be designed by the contractor. The actual scope of works will be determined later: North Wing, Lower Basement Level: — refurbishment of Back of House areas, — refurbishment of Learning Centre class rooms including new lunch room and external pavilion space, — new feature staircase and lift for access to Lower Basement level. North Wing Upper Basement Level: — structural modifications of Back of House areas and refurbishment, — refurbishment of Learning Centre class rooms, — Modifications of existing lift core structure. North Wing, Ground floor: — creation of new Orange Street Entrance Hall from newly formed Forecourt area, — modifcation of existing entrance, — refurbishment of existing FoH space, — newly formed retail space, — refurbishment of existing galleries, — newly formed mezzanine level. North Wing, First Floor: — extensive refurbishment to the existing gallery space, — structural modifications to form new doorways into gallery spaces. North Wing, Second Floor: — extensive refurbishment to the existing gallery space. East Wing, Lower Basement Level: — structural modifications and removal of lift and stairs, — newly formed stairs from Lower Basement level to Second floor. External works. — refurbishment of existing Lower Basement Café including newly formed kitchen/ servery area, — new staircase from Lower Basement to Second floor, — new goods and passage lift from Lower Basement to Second floor. East Wing Ground floor: — refurbishment of Ground Floor including new café area and forming new Gallery space, — removal of mezzanine level to First floor. East Wing, First Floor: — refurbishment of First floor including new café area and forming new Gallery space, — removal of mezzanine level to First floor. East Wing, Second Floor: — forming new fully fitted kitchen space. External — creation of forecourt and new entrance, — refurbishment and new railings around NPG building, — utilities modifications. Enabling works in advance of the Main Contract Works for the National Portrait Gallery's Inspiring People Project. Works to include reduced level excavation, targeted opening up works, preliminary structural works, strip-out of internal finishes and Mechanical and Electrical Services.
