Supply of consumables (wafers) for Terumo Sterile Connection Devices (TSCD). these consumable are used to ensure a sterile dock for blood packs and Apheresis Harnesses. IBTS owns TSCD (for secondary manufacture of blood components such as platelet concentrates derived from buffy coats or for washing of red blood cells.. Approximately 42 000 sterile connections are undertaken annually in IBTS on 12 devices,. TSCD welds are regarded as ‘functionally sterile’, achieved through heating of the single-use cutting wafer, and connections may therefore be made in the open environment. Bacterial sterility is a critical element and TSCD are demonstrably highly reliable. The National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSB&T) issued a PIN in 2017 — 2017/S 085-165178 NHSBT requires supply, maintenance and consumables for sterile connection devices (SCD) and is seeking expressions of interest from suppliers who will be able to offer a solution for the following: The devices must be suitable for blood component processing e.g. connection of additional packs and filters to primary blood collection systems and packs, connection of buffy coats etc; produce blood components that satisfy current/future guidelines; connect tubing from all blood pack systems supplied to the authority. The maintenance must be suitable for existing Terumo Sterile Connecting Devices (TSCD) I and II. The consumables must perform sterile welds between plastic PVC tubing for processing of blood and components and must be compatible with TSCD's I and II. A VEAT was subsequently published by the NHSB&T in 2018 for an eight year contract. On the basis of the PIN and response from the market and the VEAT identifying only one supplier, te IBTS negotiated with Terumo and awarded a contract. .
