Prior to commencing the formal procurement process, and to help inform our strategy, NHSBT would like to consult the market to improve our knowledge of all current offers available in the market place, identify further opportunities and potential issues, as well as gauge market interest in the proposed service. Tissue and eye services are responsible for the procurement, processing, storage, testing and issue of corneas which have been retrieved by and on behalf of NHSBT. For the transport of corneas and samples from retrieval site to the tissue banks, special boxes are used. The outside of these boxes must clearly state “human tissue for transplant” and display the NHSBT branding with the ability to seal shut with a unique identifiable tag. The boxes need to be able to remain cool enough to transport the contents without melting the crushed wet ice inside without the requirement of the box being stored below 10 ºC. Information gained from this exercise will be used to inform production of a detailed specification and subsequent advertisement through the OJEU route.
