Cardiff and Vale uLHB intends to purchase an Illumina NovaSeq 6000 sequencing system to improve and increase the provision of genetic tests that is offered by the All Wales Genetics Service. This equipment will be compatible with existing Illumina platforms. The purchase will include associated maintenance service plan. The NovaSeq 6000 System is a high-throughput genetic sequencing platform. It offers scalable throughput and flexibility for virtually any sequencing method, genome, and scale. The NovaSeq is compatible with the All Wales Genetics Service platforms, and provides consistency and continuity for greater reliability. The NovaSeq will improve and increase the provision of genetic tests that we offer at the All Wales Genetics Service. It will also allow the service to offer urgent genetic services because the instrument generates sequencing results much faster. The NovaSeq is very adaptable, and allows several “types” of genetic tests to be sequenced simultaneously. And the instrument is user friendly, it is more efficient than the current instruments. It will streamline the workflow for sequencing within the laboratory, reducing test costs by reducing the cost of sequencing consumables when compared with current sequencing methods we have in the laboratory. There will be a demand for use of the instrument from other stakeholders, especially from research because it supports a broad range of applications. The NovaSeq will future-proof the provision of genetic services for Welsh patients, and will allow the service to deliver a comparable genetic service to that of other devolved countries.
