NUIG - Provision for the Design of a Medical Device Concept designed to drain fluid from the pleural cavity

Tenders are sought for the Provision of a Medical Product Design of a Device Concept. The NUIG team are developing a technology to treat patients that suffer from recurrent pleural effusions as a result of various conditions, including breast cancer and lung cancer. The core technology aims to drain fluid from a patient’s pleural cavity and speed up the biological process through which the condition can be alleviated. This technology offers a significant improvement on current treatment options which will have a big impact on patient outcomes and quality of life, physician procedural time, necessary public health nurse resources, hospital resources and overall cost to the patient. There has been no significant innovation in this area in over 20 years. The objective of this work is to generate at least two viable concepts complete with 3D CAD models, 3D Prototypes, to complete testing on these components and to ultimately choose and refine 1 design through refinement and iterative testing. Identification, conceptualization, modelling and prototyping of a full workable system designed with all users in mind. A significant amount of the design focus should be given to human factors and industrial design elements throughout the process to ensure the aesthetic, comfort and usability of the device in the home is optimised for the patient and/or their carers.
