Tender description

BEIS is intending to procure research to quantify how installing multiple insulation measures can improve the thermal energy efficiency of the existing housing stock. The research will also investigate the risk associated with individual and combined retrofit measures and assess the need for complimentary technologies to mitigate this risk. The research will include desk-based studies in conjunction with in-situ measurements in occupied and unoccupied homes, laboratory testing of UK building materials and hygrothermal computer simulations. An ITT with the full research requirement will be published in due course. Interested parties should register their interest for this work and will be invited to a supplier engagement day in London prior to ITT publication. BEIS is planning a new research programme to investigate the potential energy efficiency improvement to homes through installing multiple insulation measures, the risks this may introduce and methods to mitigate these risks. The programme will include modelling, desk-based research, in-situ and laboratory tests. In-situ testing will involve iteratively retrofitting unoccupied solid-walled homes to quantify thermal efficiency gains. Modelling tasks will use this evidence with other data to analyse retrofit potential over a broad range of dwelling archetypes. The research will measure ventilation and fabric heat transfer as the building is iteratively brought to a higher thermal efficiency standard. The research will identify how air quality within a home changes following retrofit and the ability of different ventilation strategies to facilitate enhanced energy savings in homes.
