Brief Description of Requirement The primary aim of this project is to inform the Office as to the likely impact for consumer safety should there be a wider use of condition monitoring techniques in consumer goods. These techniques could not only help to avoid some catastrophic failure situations, but also have many other benefits to the consumer such as longer product life and improved appliance performance. However, there may be some technical disadvantages, and issues with consumer acceptability. The results of this project will be used to give the Office a well-researched and balanced view of this subject, that will be used to inform the Office policy position on the application of these technologies. The key objectives of this project are to understand: • What parameters in consumer domestic appliances might it be possible for sensors to measure? • What product safety and other benefits might this offer? • What technical disadvantages or negative consumer reactions the introduction of these technologies might bring? This contract will be awarded based on the evaluation criteria set out in the ITQ document.
