Tender description

IMPACT required a super computing capability. The high performance computing facility will be operated, used and administered by Swansea University (SU) in the context of the impact operation. The supercomputing system will be used by multiple users from SU. With the exception of planned and unplanned downtime, the facility will typically be available (with access to both computing capability and data) and in use 24/7 throughout each year of operation. The resulting computer resource should be optimised for the use of numerical analysis tools, such as the ANSYS software suite, Altair Hyperworks, LS Dyna. The supercomputing system will be located in the University Bay Campus Data Centre, up to 3 server racks will be provided – these are CoolLogic CL20 with C12SC rear doors. This gives a max cooling capacity of 31 kW for each cabinet with the 19 ˚C water supply temperature. Power to individual cabinets is delivered by a combination of PDUs connected to either UPS or raw mains. The proposed system will eventually be integrated with an existing HPC system. Therefore, the system interconnect must be compatible with the Intel OmniPath architecture. The switch arrangement in the existing HPC system is shown in the attachment and comprises 4x48 port switches arranged in a fat-tree topology arranged using one spine and 3 leaf switches. The tender price will include the cost of the network switches and cabling required to integrate the two systems. The actual integration of the 2 HPC systems is not required in this tender. The simulation codes involve both commercial software and bespoke in-house software developed mainly in C, C++ and Fortran. The simulation codes make use of the message passing interface and OpenMP, and require a high performance supercomputer network.
