Tender description

SFI / UCD seeks to commission an updated analysis of current attitudes to STEM amongst the Irish public aged 15 and over, to achieve an accurate impression of these attitudes. As was committed to at the time of publication of the 2015 Barometer, one component of this new study will be to compare its findings in 2019/2020 with the results from 2015 to identify general trends over time. This aim of this project is to undertake research amongst the general public in the republic of Ireland to gain insight on attitudes to science, producing the SFI Science in Ireland Barometer 2020. These insights will include: • The public level of understanding of the scientific process, ethics in research, trust in scientists and scientific results, etc. • The public interest and level of information/knowledge of the process and practice of science, technology and engineering innovation. • The public’s attitude to current concerns in relation to STEM, particularly on topical or potentially controversial issues such as climate change, artificial intelligence, gene technology, vaccination, evolution, etc. • Where the public sources information on STEM. • The public’s understanding, experiences and perceptions of STEM education and careers. • Public feeling of exclusion/elitism from science. • The perception of the general public towards investment in STEM research. • The science related knowledge, attitudes, experiences and resources that the public acquire through life.
