“Please note, the procurement procedure did not result in a contract award as no compliant bids were received” UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), through its component Research Council, The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), require to purchase an RF amplifier. The ISIS Facility, sited at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), is the world’s most productive pulsed neutron source. Intense bursts of neutrons are produced at 20mS intervals when a heavy metal target is bombarded by a high-energy (800 MeV) proton beam from a synchrotr on accelerator releasing neutrons by the process of spallation. An R&D programme is currently underway to develop an RF volume source without the use of Caesium. The plasma in this type of source will be sustained by inductively coupling to it high power RF at 2 MHz, therefore options are being investigated for a 100 kW peak, 2 MHz RF amplifier of high reliability and efficiency. The proposed RF ion source will require pulses of RF centred on a frequency of 2 MHz and up to 100 kW peak power. The ISIS accelerator currently operates with a pulse repetition rate of 50 Hz and a beam pulse width between 200 μs and 800 μs, in order to maintain compatibility the RF ion source will operate over a similar pulse width and repetition rate. The proposed amplifier unit should be enclosed within standard 19 inch cabinet footprint. It will perform within the operating parameters stated in the full specification. Its “interlocks”, both internal and external will afford protection to operators, itself and down-stream equipment. Status will be displayed such that its operational mode is clear and fault finding is logically guided. A level of redundancy is to be incorporated that will permit continued operation at reduced power. All submissions will be assessed in accordance with the Public Contracts Regulations 2015, for procurement values that exceed Regulation 5 (Threshold amounts). This procurement will be managed electronically via the Crown Commercial Service’s e-Sourcing Suite.
