Tender description
The National Railway Museum Central Hall Design Competition seeks an outstanding integrated team to design a new centrepiece building and propose enhancements to some of the fabric, infrastructure and organisation of the existing museum buildings. The Central Hall will unite the core museum buildings, combining a new entrance experience with public-facing spaces for exhibition, orientation and reception. The circa 4 500 m2 building needs to seamlessly integrate with existing museum spaces and will feature a spectacular new 1 000 m2 gallery. The building has a 16 500 000 GBP construction budget. A series of significant upgrades to the existing buildings is also planned, with budgets identified for elements such as roofs, façade, demolitions, openings and services. These works have an associated construction budget of no more than 10 000 000 GBP. Depending on the post competition concept design, a proportion of these works may be undertaken by the appointed team for this project. The procurement is a 2-stage competition run under the restricted procedure. At stage one of the competition, the National Railway Museum is seeking integrated teams comprising: lead consultant, architect, principal designer (under the Construction and Design Management [CDM] Regulations 2015), Structural and Civil Engineer and MEP (Services) Engineer. At the first stage of the competition, at least 5 competitors will be shortlisted on the basis of the selection criteria set out in the Search Statement. At stage 2, teams will be asked to produce a design concept, based on the detailed information set out in the competition conditions and its appendices. Internationally-based competitors may be required to propose a UK-based executive architect as part of their team at stage 2. The subject of this procurement process is the contract for full design services (RIBA 0-7) for the Central Hall, as well as full design services for a series of wider architectural and infrastructural improvements to the museum up to completion of RIBA Work Stage 2 (Concept Design) with an option to extend for further Work Stages 3-7 as required.
