Commissioning of Somerset’s Community Falls Prevention Programme: Somerset County Council is seeking to hear from organisations interested in the opportunity of delivering Somerset Public Health’s falls prevention Stay Strong Stay Steady (SSSS) programme. Currently the programme is provided through an annual grant offer. Introducing a commissioned service over a period will enable continued growth, stability and development of the programme. The programme provides community based falls prevention classes across the county using Otago, an evidence based falls prevention exercise programme, to meet national guidelines and recommendations. The programme is structured and requires adherence to criteria, data gathering to ensure fidelity and that appropriate participants receive the intervention. The programme is embedded in the Somerset Falls Service Pathway and referral system within health and care. Falls prevention is a key area of focus in Somerset due to the ageing population and increasing rate of falls, falls admissions and hip fractures. For example, in 2017-2018 there were 3 000 emergency admissions for falls in those aged 65 and over and 760 hip fractures recorded. The subsequent cost of falls and fractures to individuals, their families and the health and care system is high, and a robust community based programme is essential to support prevention.
