The works involve the construction of highway and structural civil engineering work for the improvement of the existing junction at Greengates including the widening of the existing highway on all four arms of the junction, signal upgrades, a P-Loop’ and improvements for pedestrians and cyclists. The Scheme will involve major civil engineering works, including: — substantial widening of the existing highway on all four arms of the junction, — replacement and upgrading of the Junction traffic signals, — P-Loop Junction', a new length of highway that would facilitate left and right vehicle turning manoeuvres from Harrogate Road, — improvements to facilities for pedestrians including the provision of pedestrian controlled crossings and central pedestrian islands, — improvements to facilities for cyclists including the introduction of cycle lanes and advance stop lines at traffic signals, — demolition of 3 No properties, — demolition and reconstruction on new alignments of retaining wall features adjacent to the A657, — closure of existing Farm Foods Supermarket`s store highway access and construction of a new access, — accommodation works to affected land and properties, — new and replacement planting and landscaping in multiple locations, — road lighting improvements., — relocation of 5 bus stops, — significant diversions of statutory undertaker’s plant and services. The scheme requires widening of the existing highway into land currently owned by the Council and private landowners. The specific works will include structural sheet piled and mass concrete retaining walls, boundary walls, site clearance, excavation in preparation for the diversion of statutory undertakers plant and equipment, slewing, lowering and concrete protection of some statutory undertakers apparatus, fencing, vehicle restraint parapet, highway drainage and attenuation, earthworks, disposal of materials (including hazardous material), pavements and footways, planing reconstruction and resurfacing of existing carriageways and footways, road markings, road lighting, signing, pedestrian and cycling facilities and accommodation works for third parties. Given the nature of the site, adjoining development, the volume of traffic and pedestrian movements it is expected that works will be required outside normal working hours. The permanent works will replace/upgrade the existing junction traffic signals (UTC Equipment including CCTV). The employer will use his own contractors to install and commission all the traffic signals (UTC) equipment, induction loops, etc including removal of existing electrical equipment and will arrange for electricity cabling connections and disconnections directly with the energy company. The contractor will be responsible for associated groundwork; laying ducts for cables, building ground boxes, erecting new traffic signal poles (provided by the employer), taking down redundant traffic signal poles and feeder pillars and coordinating work between various contractors (for example carriageway surfacing and traffic signals induction loop cutting). The contractor shall allow for all this work in his programme. It is anticipated that the tender will be published in September 2019.
