Provision of Highgate Railway Bridge Bearings Replacement

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (the Council) is looking to extend the serviceable life of Highgate Railway Bridge by undertaking strengthening works. These works will include bridge bearings replacement and associated construction works. The bearing replacement can be undertaken by jacking the structure and replacing existing bearings. Therefore, a series of structural assessment/design needs to be carried out in accordance with the appropriate Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standard to determine jacking design loads including tolerances, bearing design loads in accordance with bearing schedule and movement allowance, and load carrying capacity of the bridge. Highgate Railway Bridge is a four span simply supported deck with precast prestressed concrete beams acting compositely with an in situ reinforced concrete deck slab. The deck is supported by three reinforced concrete piers and two bank seats. The bridge was constructed during 1994 as part of the Dearne Towns Link Road to carry the A6195 highway over a Railway line (Rotherham to Wakefield), the adjacent mineral line and a public bridleway.
