Tender description

The company has a requirement for the recycling and re-use of its 10 000 tonnes of waste water sewage grits (ECW 19.08.02). Definitions: Screenings mean: bulky solids mechanically removed from wastewater (sewage) flows during the preliminary stage of treatment. They are made up primarily of plastics, paper and wood but will also contain organic matter. Grit means: inorganic gravel, stones and silts settled out of sewage flows following the removal of screenings, prior to the primary and secondary biological processes. Background: United Utilities Water Ltd produce approximately 10 000 tonnes of grit from sewage works preliminary treatment and tank and digester cleaning services each year. The Company has explored and trialled numerous disposal routes over the years searching for the most commercial efficient disposal option. For the last 8 years the majority of the Company’s grits have been processed as dry grit by windrowing, drying and trommelling the grit before it is sent to soil manufacture or restoration. The trommell used in the current process separates the grits from screenings and any other oversized items, the screenings separated then go to landfill sites which apply the United Utilities Water HMRC water discount. End destination locations for the grits have been sourced by both the Company and the incumbent supplier located within the North West region. The incumbent supplier currently undertakes all manner of services for the Companies grit trommelling services which includes the processing (trommelling), windrowing utilising the use of a loadall, sourcing of the end destination and transportation to the end destination. Grits are transported to 3 of the Companies sites where they are stockpiled until an adequate volume of grits has collected for the trommelling services to commence: — Blackburn WwTW, Cuerdale Lane, Salmesbury, PR50UY, — Halewood Pumping Station, Ramsbrook Lane, Hale Village, Liverpool, L24 5RP, — Stretford WwTW, Bradley Lane, M42 8RH. As production volumes vary there is no set period of frequency for trommelling services. When an accumulation of grit is available the recycling manager will contact the incumbent supplier to request services. In the first instance the incumbent supplier will windrow the grits to dry them out for a period of time. Once dried the incumbent supplier will trommell, load and haul the grits to an end destination they have sourced primarily being restoration or soil manufacture. These two activities can occur at the same time. Requirement: The Company is seeking commercially efficient solution for the recycling and re-use of its waste water sewage grits (EWC 19.08.02). The Company is seeking a solution from a supplier(s) who can either recycle or re-use the grits in its current format of windrowing, trommelling, sourcing of outlets and haulage or provide an alternative innovative solution for the recycling and re-of its grits. Key objectives: To source a solution that is commercially efficient. To source a solution that supports the company’s objective for landfill avoidance.
