Natural Resources Wales (NRW) manages the Welsh Government Woodland Estate (WGWE) on behalf of the Welsh Government. The annual restocking programme can vary considerably from 1 000 ha — 1 800 ha with further plants required to ‘beat up’ gaps in existing planted sites. NRW require a wide range of species, plant types, provenances and numbers to restock the varying site types. This all Wales plant supply tender consists of 3 lots in line with regional boundaries North, Mid and South. NRW is seeking to award 3 separate contracts to deliver its short-term plant requirements across the WGWE up until 31.5.2022, by which time a new long-term contract will be in place. We anticipate awarding these short-term contracts in April 2019 to begin supplying NRW from 1.10.2020. NRW manages the Welsh Government Woodland Estate (WGWE) on behalf of the Welsh Government reflecting the principles outlined by the Minister in ‘The Role and Purpose of the WGWE’. The WGWE will be managed in line with the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) and be independently certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). NRW has strategies for developing resilient woodlands which include species and genetic diversity. There is an overarching principle that NRW will only purchase plants that are grown in the UK from seed or UK cuttings. As part of the management, NRW is responsible for the restocking of the WGWE and requires suitable plants to fulfil this function.
