Magnetometer geophysical instruments

Tender description

The University intends to purchase a Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM)-enabled SQUID magnetometer. Magnetic measurements are key for characterising a wide range of magnetic materials ranging from bulk systems through thin films to nanoparticles and molecular materials, enabling an understanding of the electronic structure and magnetic phenomena in molecular and magnetically ordered systems. The Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) based magnetometer, will have vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) capability, and be capable of providing high magnetic fields and high sensitivity over a wide temperature range, to support the research of many groups in this area, and to provide a facility for such measurements nation-wide. The University intends to purchase a Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM)-enabled SQUID magnetometer. The new magnetometer will be sited in the Photon Science Institute at The University of Manchester, replacing older instrumentation. The dominant users will be the many Manchester groups involved in the chemistry and physics of molecular materials and nanomagnetism/spintronics. These include the Manchester Molecular Magnetism (MMM) group in Chemistry and the Nano-Engineering and Storage Technologies (NEST) group in Computer Science. The research requires AC susceptibility, vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) enabled SQUID detection, sample rotation, sample oven, optical access, and low-field capabilities and with variable temperature operation enabled by a closed-system cryostat.
