Abstract: The centre for high frequency engineering (CHFE) at Cardiff University requires new measurement equipment to build upon its well-established harmonic source/load pull method of device characterisation based on waveform engineering concepts, that will extend existing measurement capabilities up to 110 GHz, to access strategically important mm-wave frequency bands relevant to a large number of emerging mass-markets; 5G communications bands (24-32 GHz and 36-42 GHz), Ka-band satellite communications systems (E-band communications and automotive radars (71-86 GHz), W-band communications and mm-wave imaging applications. Moreover, the operational limits of the new transistor technologies created for these and future applications can only be determined if characterised using waveform engineering techniques, in the frequency bands where they will operate.
