The Cardiff and Vale University Health Board are looking to replace 2 Fibroscanners within the Medicine Clinical Board. Fibroscans are a safe and effective non-invasive method for determining the extent of liver disease. They obviate the need for liver biopsy with all of its drain on resource and its risks (bleeding, pain, hospital admission, pneumothorax, bowel perforation and even death). The Cardiff and Vale University Health Board are looking to replace 2 Fibroscanners within the Medicine Clinical Board. Fibroscans are a safe and effective non-invasive method for determining the extent of liver disease. They obviate the need for liver biopsy with all of its drain on resource and its risks (bleeding, pain, hospital admission, pneumothorax, bowel perforation and even death). In addition fibroscans can be carried out as frequently as is appropriate for the individual patient and are therefore able to pick up disease progression much faster than any liver biopsy schedule. This increases the chance of patients receiving prompt treatment and reduces the chances of them developing significant liver disease.
