Cardiff and Vale uLHB intends to purchase aHitachi HT7800 120 kV TEM system to improve and increase the provision of hisptopathology testing that is offered by the helath baard, under Laborastory Medicine. This equipment will be compatible with existing Hitachi platforms. The purchase will include associated maintenance service plan The Cardiff and Vale ULHB Electron Microscopy (EM) Unit is the sole NHS provider in Wales for a number of essential specialist diagnostic services to various Health Boards across Wales and presently to numerous Trusts in England. These services include, but are not limited to, diagnostic renal and renal transplant biopsies, neuropathology and cancer diagnostics. The EM unit provides a Wales wide public service and expertise to Cardiff and Vale UHB. The EM unit provides mandatory diagnostic services to the Abertawe Bromorgannwg UHB, and presently is commissioned to deliver services to North Bristol Foundation Trusst covering South West England regions, Cheltenham & Gloucestershire Trust, Sussex, Birmingham and Lancashire regions, with the possibility of more users in the future. The EM unit provides diagnosis for up to 1000 cases a year at present, with 855 being referred to the unit from other trusts in 2017. The EM unit presently receives around 500 cases for mineral analysis and about one-third of cases are submitted for additional diagnostic opinion. It is essential that the performance and specification of the equipment equipment be suitable for the volumes and complexity of the analysis demanded.
