The education and training foundation awarded a contract to design, develop, recruit to, deliver and manage a middle managers programme for the further education and training sector. The programme was designed to be of the highest quality, providing significant benefits to individual participants and show demonstrable impact on their institutions. The education and training foundation awarded a contract to design and deliver a middle manager programme. The needs of the middle management group are diverse. Each person has a variety of personal and professional requirements, so a personalised approach was required. It is common practice for staff to be employed straight into a teaching role, training to be a teacher whilst in the role. This group includes teachers and managers, thus a range of needs had to be considered in designing and delivering the programme to ensure it was meaningful to personal and professional development, as well as being very work related and based on real live job requirements. The programme was designed to be as practical as possible, emphasising contextualised project work beneficial to the individual developing their own personal skills and abilities and, at the same time benefiting the organisation and sector. Practice was supported by theory, tools and materials beneficial to individuals in their work with others, namely their teams if they are a manager of people. The programme requirements were varied and complex, so a adaptable approach rather than a “one size fits all” approach was taken. A key focus of the programme was to ensure it was flexible, transferable, a modular and unitised scheme.
