Tender description
The museum of London is planning to relocate from its current home at London Wall to a new home in West Smithfield from 2023. The new museum scheme sees the old general market and the current poultry market being refurbished and brought up to world class museum standards. Integral to the scheme is enclosing West Poultry Avenue, which is the road between the 2 buildings, so that it becomes part of the scheme and unifies the 2 buildings. The City of London Corporation's Smithfield Tunnel Lids Upgrade Project therefore is a significant set of works designed to alleviate load, deliver structural refurbishment and new waterproofing to areas over both live running tunnels, sidings and existing basements, which lie under the New museum footprint and surrounding streets. Within this scope lies an interface with network rail, who require their current access route on to the tracks to be relocated to prevent it from impacting on the new museum's functionality. The proposed site is located within the City of London near Farringdon Road. West Poultry Avenue is the adjoining road between the Charterhouse Street and West Smithfield. On plan the NR tunnels run at a slight angle to the proposed building layout, consequently underlying part sections of West Poultry Avenue, the adjoining streets (Charterhouse and West Smithfield) and the General Market building. The following is a summary of the works included in this contract, split into three sections for clarity: — tunnel lids direct works, — network rail access works — basement level, — further miscellaneous works — bridge works.
