This specification is for an electron spectrometer combining state of the art X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) system including a main surface analysis unit with features/attachments for added functionalities (SAU) and a “customized plasma add-on” (PAD) attachment to allow for unique plasma processing before sample introduction in the main instrument analysis chamber SAU. The full system (hereafter UU-PS) may also include 1 or more sample transfer chambers (STCs), which are to be considered as necessary to meet all requirements described below. The configuration of choice is determined as per requirements in this document. The SAU is to be an independent fully functional instrument as per requirements below without the PAD, where 1 or more STCs could be used for sample transfer/introduction. The PAD is preferably a detachable unit.
