Rotary kiln drum survey The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) is an executive agency of the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom. Its stated purpose is to maximise the impact of science and technology for the defence and security of the UK. Dstl's existing kiln is a RP8 primary chamber manufactured by Ciroldi, in Italy. It was manufactured as a bespoke design which was quoted and fitted approximately in October 2009 to Porton Down, Salisbury. The kiln comes complete with driving bands, side door opening, an additional stiffening band and supports and internal bracing for transport to help prevent damage during transport. It also comes with a kiln head supporting legs, and a new fire door for the kiln head for which we have a spare all of these parts come with silicon coating. The kiln is internal diameter of 2 meters that sits on 4 rollers that allow the kiln to rotate. The operating temperature is between 500-1 000 degrees with a max temperature of 1 500 degrees. The deash door is approximately central and the rotary kiln runs in the horizontal plane with no incline the structure is lined with approximately 18 inches of refractory lining. The kiln has thermocouples to determine temperature, pressure sensors and rotation sensors controlled by PLC. The current loading system into the kiln uses 205 ltr bins on an automated life and return delivery system, PLC driven. There are a number of modifications and redesign requirements since the original manufacture and installation. There is cracking around the kiln drum raising concerns of safe operation of the kiln. The Authority requires a qualified professional (visual and material) survey regarding the continued, safe operation of the rotary kiln, and recommendations for future ways including Rough Order Magnitude costing. The plan should allow for safe operational use of the rotary kiln until planned de-commissioning in 5-10 years’ time. The Contractor shall provide expert recommendations for Commercially Off The Shelf (COTS) solutions with possible upgrades available; short (up to 12 months), medium (1-3 years) and long-term (4-10 years).
