CAZ Signing Strategy and Preliminary Design

Highways England is looking to set up a contract with a Consultant to initially develop guidance, and subsequently develop preliminary designs, to sign Local Authorities' charging Clean Air Zones (CAZ) from the Strategic Road Network (SRN). This is nationally important work that needs to be rapidly advanced given the first wave of Local Authorities (LAs) have been tasked by government to have such CAZ operational by 1st January 2020. The Joint Air Quality Unit (JAQU) has produced signing guidance for LAs to follow as they work to design and implement signing for their charging CAZ. Such guidance does not fully cover the signing requirements for Highways England's network, the SRN. It is therefore proposed to further develop the existing guidance for application on the SRN.
