The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is one of the largest public sector pension schemes in the country and administration is carried out by 89 regional funds across England and Wales. Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council is responsible for administering the Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF) and is therefore an LGPS Administering Authority. GMPF, which can trace its origins back to 1891, is one of the earliest funds among local authorities providing retirement benefits for employees. In addition to this long history, it has been responsible for a number of initiatives over the years that have been firsts in local government pension administration. The LGPS is governed at a national and local level with each of the local funds having a number of statutory requirements and obligations to fulfil, as outlined within the LGPS regulations and other legislation. GMPF is the largest LGPS fund in the country, with over 370,000 members working over 570 employers, with assets valued at over £22 billion. We are proud of the service we deliver and the way in which we provide it. However, we are continually looking to improve and lead the way in LGPS provision for all our stakeholders.
