STUDY INTO USE OF LAMP COLUMNS FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING

Tender description

This project is for a study into the use of lamp (street lighting) columns for the purposes of electric vehicle charging within the London Borough of Sutton, with the pilot area being Sutton Town Centre. Emissions from motor vehicles contribute to air pollution which affects public health. The London Borough of Sutton is an Air Quality Management Area which has been declared for both nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter. However, it is the Air Quality Objectives for nitrogen dioxide which continue to be breached within areas of the borough close to busy and congested roads. The borough is in the process of reviewing its Air Quality Action Plan and has received funding to implement air quality improvement measures in and around Sutton town Centre. In order to improve air quality, the borough is aiming to support and promote a switch to low emission vehicles including those which run on electric. As well as the desire to improve air quality in the borough, this project is being developed to support the Council’s One Planet Sutton initiative and the recently approved Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles policy. Before developing an implementation plan for converting lamp columns in Sutton Town Centre, London Borough of Sutton wishes to develop a high level design guidance for the implementation of lamp column charging. While the pilot area for converting lamp columns will be Sutton Town Centre, we recognise that this will be making provisions to which all borough residents have access. We wish to ensure that any actions taken within the pilot area can be replicated across the borough so are seeking a Design Guidance for the borough.
