Sefton is one of five boroughs comprising the Merseyside metropolitan area. It is located between the Mersey and Ribble estuaries with a coastline of 22 miles. Sefton is amongst the most deprived quarter of Local Authorities across England (ranked 76 of 326). However, the borough is very diverse and as well as having 5 Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) in the most deprived 1% of areas across England, it also has two LSOAs in the least deprived 5% of areas. Across Sefton 19% (53,201) of the population are aged under 18, 58% (158,697) of residents are working age (18-64), both of which are lower than the national and regional rates for young people and working age residents. The proportion of the population aged over 65 in Sefton is 23% (61,809), considerably higher than across England as a whole and the North West, where over 65s account for 18% of the population. The average age of a Sefton resident is 45.5 years, five years older than the average age across the UK, where it is 40 years.
