Landfill Leachate Survey for Persistent Organic Pollutants

Development of our understanding of the fate of POPs emissions in the environment, and the key areas to target remediation. In addition, landfill operators, as part of their permit conditions, are required to regularly monitor for fugitive emissions to local groundwater. This project will help us to ensure that this monitoring is fit for purpose and that the substances analysed for are relevant to the landfill in question, with particular regard to POPs and substances relevant to Water Framework Directive (WFD). There are two main aims for this broader project (parts 1 and 2). Firstly, to complete a landfill leachate survey, as outlined in the UK POPs National Implementation Plan (NIP). This will give us a view of POPs in this potentially important compartment and their impact on the fresh water/marine environments. Secondly, the results of this project will be used in conjunction with previous projects, performed by both EA and other relevant organisations to build an overall picture of the flow of substances that are known to be, or that we suspect to be harmful to the environment. This may direct future landfill design and/or change the way landfill leachate is handled.
