Research has shown that when children and young people are asked to name careers in the NHS, most people will say doctor, nurse, midwife and paramedic. In fact, there are over 350 different careers ranging from art therapist to window cleaner. The role of Health Careers is to make people aware of the range of opportunities available and offer them up-to-date and reliable careers information. We develop campaign and communications projects to help us achieve this and develop solutions to specific recruitment problems in the NHS. As part of this work, the Health Careers team at NHS Health Education England has been running schools programmes for the last ten years. The Step into the NHS competition for secondary schools has been running successfully for the last ten years. This year, we have introduced a primary schools campaign following a successful pilot of teaching resources earlier in the year. As well as helping children and young people understand the range of career opportunities in the NHS, the campaigns aim to raise career aspirations, especially within state comprehensive schools.
