Air Quality Grant 2018-19 Revenue Grant to LA

Tender description

The purpose of the Air Quality Grant Scheme is to incentivise LAs to improve air quality in areas most in need of improvement and identify projects which are likely to have the greatest environmental impact. Clean air is vital for people’s health and the environment. Tackling all sources of air pollution is essential for making sure our cities and towns are welcoming places for people to live and work in, now and in the future. Whilst the majority of LAs’ Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs) are declared because of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution associated with road transport, there are also AQMAs which have been declared because of particulate matter (PM). Furthermore, 38% of harmful primary PM emissions in the UK come from burning wood and coal in domestic open fires. In making a decision to award a Grant, the Authority will give particular consideration to Applications which focus on areas of England where Defra’s national air quality assessment, as reported to the EU Commission, identified and/or projected an exceedance, and/or that have one or more Air Quality Management Areas. Particular consideration will also be given to an LA’s compliance with the various Local Air Quality Monitoring (LAQM) reporting requirements and which have a Smoke Control Area.
