The Ekso Bionic is a wearable suit that helps individuals with any amount of extremity weakness or paralysis including those with complete spinal cord injury to stand up and walk with a natural , fully weight bearing gane. The robotic exoskeleton helps patients re-learn correct patterns while also enabling correct weight shift when walking. This enables as close as possible a normal physiological and biochemical gait pattern. Walking is achieved by the user's weight shift or the activation of the sensors in the device that initiate the steps. Powered motors drive the legs replacing the deficient neurological function , the Ekso is designed to be flexible and dynamic for the patient as they progress their rehabilitation programme. They were originally developed by DARPA to help soldiers carry heavy loads, Ekso Bionics suits were repurposed to help victims of stroke, traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury get back up on their feet. Now, rehabilitation clinics across the country have started using this Exoskeleton to help patients with lower extremity weakness relearn how to walk. With the help of specially trained physical therapists , patients strap their legs into the bionic suit as wellas fasten a rigid brace around their waist. With two crutches on their arms the patient stands-up from a sitting position and start walking when they are ready, weight sensors in the suit perceive when the user shifts his or her weight forward triggering the device to make a step.
