The provision of a CCE (Colon Capsule Endoscopy), delivery, reading and reporting service integrated into the NHS across Scotland. SCOTCAP is a programme for an innovative point-of-care (PoC) investigation of the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract using minimally invasive colon capsule endoscopy (CCE). By using CCE the GI investigation can be initiated and executed in primary care and can be overseen remotely by a GI consultant using Attend anywhere. The formative NHS Highland (HICAP) project has pioneered this work with feasibility and economic studies conducted by DHI at primary care sites in Skye and Ullapool. The programme is further supported by a published evidence base involving several thousand patients e.g. Harvard system. CCE is an innovative technology. After full bowel preparation, a capsule containing a digital camera is swallowed, passes through the gastrointestinal tract and downloads 400 000, 3 dimensional images which are then virtually viewed and analysed then a report issued to the consultant for diagnosis. A complete CCE is highly accurate, potentially very cost effective, less invasive and more acceptable to patients than existing methods.
